I dedicate today’s article to colored pencils as my favorite drawing tool. Anyone who has ever tried to draw with good colored pencils will agree with me, this is just a wonderful thing, although quite difficult to learn, as it may seem at first glance.
Drawing with colored pencils combines the charm of graphics and the ability to work with color, which is typical for painting. At the same time, this technique has its own nuances. But, as I said in one of my articles, you need to start working with the best tools and materials, which is undoubtedly just a motto if you decide to try your hand at drawing with colored pencils.
So, which colored pencils should you choose? And how not to get lost among such a variety of manufacturers, their brands and color sets?…
The best company producing colored pencils is considered to be Faber-Castell . This is a German company that has managed to establish itself among millions of buyers around the world for its more than two hundred years of history.
It should be noted that the pencils of this company have several categories, the so-called “lines”, which differ in quality, price and actual purpose:
1) “red line” is a series of products for children from 3-12 years old. Colored pencils in this series are quite good, you can start to try your hand at drawing with them. You can distinguish it from others by a red box with some kind of children’s illustration. But if possible, it is better not to waste money and buy yourself pencils from a different series. These pencils are quite dull and hard, there is no possibility of lighter colors overlapping with darker ones;
2) “blue line” – hobby goods that are suitable for both beginners and professionals. Colored pencils in this series are called Art Grip . They are already of fairly good quality. As part of the line, there are both ordinary colored pencils and watercolors, which are usually softer and have the ability to blur with water after being applied to paper and take on the look of watercolor. The colors are much brighter and richer than in the previous series. These pencils can be safely recommended as the best colored pencils for those who are just starting to master this technique;
3) “green line” – products for professional artists. Colored pencils in this series are also divided into ordinary colored pencils – Polychromos , and watercolors – Albrecht Durer . These are already pencils for those who are in the subject) Unsurpassed quality, excellent colors, maximum resistance to light. They can be recommended for those who already have experience with colored pencils, as they are still expensive for beginners. But if you want to seriously engage in this technique and are not afraid of failure, then you can start with them.
If we talk about the number of colors, then I advise you to start with 24 . With experience, there will be a need to expand your own set of pencils. By the way, Faber-Castell produces not only sets of pencils, but also individual colors, which is also important, since some pencils are spent more than others.
